Stockholm is the capital and the largest city of Sweden. A mirage of saffron- and terracotta-coloured buildings shimmering between blue water and bluer skies all summer, or covered with snow and dotted with lights in winter. The old town Gamla Stan,crooked but beautifully preserved buildings, the Royal Palace, gothic churches and excellent cafés, bars and Swedish design-ware shops. Hundreds of restaurants of varying taste and style are found here, as well as innumerable shops and galleries showcasing the works of Stockholm’s exceptional arts community. Music in the city ranges over all types, from folk dancing in the parks and summer jazz festivals and classical concerts to Swedish and American pop and rock.
The world’s oldest restored warship, Vasa, is on exhibit at its new museum on the island of Djurgården, located on the central island of Djurgården in Stockholm and home to the Royal Ship Vasa. Visiting Vasa Museum you will have the chance to take a guided tour which will offer exciting insight into the life of 15th century sailors, the construction of the ship.
The home of artists Carl and Olga Milles. A spectacular park built on terraces includes Carl Milles most famous sculptures from antiquity and the Middle Ages to the last century stand sentinel above the Lilla Värtan strait, with the Baltic Sea beyond. Original castings and tools are on display in the large studio. Art gallery, museum shop and bistro. On the island of Lidingo lies Millesgarden, the home and studio of Sweden’s famous modern sculptor, the late Carl Milles. The estate, beautifully arranged on terraces in a series of small gardens overlooking the Baltic Sea, contains a tremendous collection of his own and other great works.
The Royal National City Park
The world’s first national city park is a green lung forming an arc more than six miles long, stretching around and through the city. The park abuts the adjoining forests around the city, ensuring an exceptional wealth of species. You can encounter deer and hares, even foxes and elk, and see rare birds and insects, right inside the city. There’s an abundance of things to see: museums, an amusement park, castles, restaurants and hotels. The park is made up of several park areas which are easy to reach by public transportation and ferries.
